Stuck at home in July 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, I wanted to find an unusual way to present my work - and so I strung some washing lines around my balcony and got to hanging up my drawings and paintings using clothes pegs.
In making these drawings, I was primarily interested by drawing machines and how far you can remove an artist's control from their work. I made my own drawing machines, but eventually got bored - and decided to use my whole body as a 'machine'.
By this, I mean that I wanted to forego all creative control, apart from picking the colours, and simply enjoy the motion and the feeling of creating. This resulted in these two big drawings - one in oil pastel and one in red and black ink.
I used my joints as the pivot points here to create these intricate interlocking circles and arcs. I think you can really feel the motion that went into these drawings when you look at them.
I also loved this method of presentation - just seeing the work all together, flapping slightly in the breeze, filled me with such a sense of joy that I'd done so much, despite finding it increasingly hard to get up in the mornings due to being locked down at home.
